## What is it?

DHL Express is a global express courier integrated with Ingrid for checkout, booking, and tracking. This article covers DHL Express specifically. DHL Freight, DHL E-commerce, and DHL Paket are separate integrations with their own setup paths.

## How credentials work for DHL Express

DHL Express in Ingrid uses different credentials models depending on the function:

| **Checkout** | Ingrid-unified | None — Ingrid handles authentication centrally |
| **Booking** | Merchant-owned | Provide credentials from the DHL developer portal (see Initial setup below) |
| **Tracking** | Ingrid-unified (DHL Unified) | None — Ingrid handles authentication centrally |

For most merchants, this means **you only need to take action for booking**. Once booking credentials (including your DHL account number) are configured, checkout and tracking both work automatically.

## Initial setup (booking)

To book shipments via DHL Express through Ingrid, you need API credentials from the DHL developer portal (DPDHL). The credentials apply across all DHL Express shipping methods — you don't need separate credentials per method.

### What you'll provide

- DHL Express MyDHL API username (also called API key)
- DHL Express MyDHL API password (also called API secret)
- Your DHL account number

### How to get credentials from DHL

1. Register a login at the **DPDHL developer portal**: [developer.dhl.com/user/register](https://developer.dhl.com/user/register)
2. Sign in and navigate to the DHL Express API page: [developer.dhl.com/api-reference/dhl-express-mydhl-api](https://developer.dhl.com/api-reference/dhl-express-mydhl-api)
3. Click **Get Access** at the top right
4. Fill in your DHL account number and company details
5. In the request, state that you need credentials for the **Ingrid third-party solution**, and that the use case is **Shipment**
6. Once DHL provisions the credentials, share them with your Ingrid team to configure in Ingrid

## What if something goes wrong?

**Q: Do I need DHL credentials to show delivery options at checkout?**  
A: No. For checkout, Ingrid uses its own shared credentials with DHL Express. No merchant credentials are required for the checkout function.

**Q: Why do I need credentials for booking but not for checkout?**  
A: Booking creates a shipment and label against your specific DHL account — this can only happen with your own credentials. Checkout fetches rate and option data, which Ingrid handles centrally using shared credentials.
